People spend about one-third of their lives at work — so it's no surprise that employee satisfaction is such a valuable commodity for both companies and employees. In our second annual survey, we asked Minnesotans what's important to them when it comes to their work life, and what makes their company a great place to be. The 100 Best were chosen using data gathered from an anonymous employee satisfaction survey administered by an independent research group. Only the top Minnesota companies as judged in areas such as work environment, employee benefits, and employee happiness were selected for inclusion in the list.

NoteA small company is often defined as having fewer than 100 employees, a medium as 100 to 499, and a large as 500-plus. Given our focus on smaller companies, here we've defined small as up to 35, medium as 36 to 99, and large as 100-plus (full-time employees). Below, we list the number of full-time Minnesota employees.

StoneArch partners with industry-leading medical device and health care companies from around the world to develop, create, and execute award-winning marketing campaigns, meetings, and learning initiatives. But its focus on health care doesn't stop with its clients. Boasting two "Healthiest Places to Work" awards in 2012, the company encourages its employees to maintain healthy lifestyles both at work and at home. The employee-run wellness team organizes activities like employee Olympics, healthy potlucks, and Wii Fit events. The team has also purchased standing desks, hula hoops, jump ropes, and Nice Ride passes to help employees stay moving.

Company culture is also a priority for StoneArch. Things like a cash incentive plan, monthly office-wide, company-sponsored lunches to celebrate meeting sales goals, weekly company-sponsored happy hours, and an annual all-employee retreat contribute to a positive work environment. Employees have also taken initiative in building company culture by creating community outreach events like the "Five-day Grain" campaign to help community food shelves.

StoneArch also sees the value in developing its talent. The company encourages employees to take advantage of a generous professional development budget and holds monthly staff meetings, along with its annual retreat that includes both developmental and social activities.

Leadership keeps the lines of communication open with employees on a daily basis, whether that involves taking them to lunch, participating in social events, or strategically positioning their work areas among the rest of the staff in the office's open work environment.

Employee benefits are also important to StoneArch. New employees start out with three weeks of paid time off, and part-time employees can earn up to 10 days of paid time off. The company makes contributions to employee retirement accounts and pays 100 percent of employee health care premiums.
