Zamboni works with Digi International to create connected ice resurfacers

By Hill Tiguila

Minnetonka-based Digi International, a provider of "internet of things" (IoT) products, services and solutions, has collaborated with the Zamboni Company to design and build the world’s first smart-connected ice resurfacer. Zamboni Connect — the name of the application — allows users instant access to data and remote oversight for their ice resurfacer operations. The simple dashboard is optimized for phone, tablet or web-based use, and gives controllers insights into their equipment.

“By collaborating with Digi, we were able to design, build and launch a web and mobile application with complex reporting capabilities while maintaining the flexibility to grow over time. Using Digi's unique products and working with its professional services team, our goal of connecting Zamboni machines to the IoT and being first to market was achieved,” says Derek Gunn, vice president of operations for the Zamboni Company.

In addition to tracking key performance metrics, Zamboni Connect keeps maintenance logs and houses reference materials for the machines. The application’s smart services are offered through Zamboni’s line of ice resurfacers and support both single resurfacer rinks and arena fleets.
