How the 'Made Here' project merges art and commercial real estate
What to do with vacant downtown storefronts? It's a question many cities must answer. In the case of Minneapolis, a solution comes courtesy of the Hennepin Theatre Trust's "Made Here" initiative, scheduled to expand its presence in the Block E area (once home to the Borders bookstore) later this month. Street-level windows on Hennepin Avenue between 6th and 7th streets will (temporarily) showcase the work of Minnesota artists. The program isn't just about helping artists and energizing neighborhoods. It's also about showcasing commercial real estate that's available for lease. The project's target opening date is Saturday, Sept. 28, with guided public walking tours on offer.
