Pequot Lakes, Minn., is hoping for a boost in its economy as plans move forward for a new 69-room hotel to be called the Bobber Inn and Suites, according to Lakeland News. The official groundbreaking for the Wyndham Trademark Collection project is expected in August and would be the first step toward revitalizing an 80-acre parcel that has struggled to attract investment since a highway bypass redirected traffic away from the community nine years ago.
Developer Monty Jensen initially approached city officials with a proposal to build housing on the site, which is off Highway 371 near the Paul Bunyon State Trail. Although the city was open to the idea, discussions revealed challenges: zoning adjustments would be required, infrastructure upgrades were significant and community feedback suggested that housing alone wouldn’t generate the economic momentum the area needed. As conversations continued, Jensen told Lakeland News, he recognized that hospitality might be a better catalyst—something that could draw visitors, support local businesses and signal to other developers that the site was ready for reinvention.
Bobber Inn and Suites is described as an “up north lodge” with a natural aesthetic, lobby bar, pool, hot tub, fitness center and other mid‑scale amenities. The hotel aims to offer a more affordable option than the region’s established resorts.
Those nearby resorts include Grand View Lodge in Nisswa, about 7 miles south, and Breezy Point Resort, roughly 5 miles east. Both are large, full‑service destinations with golf courses, restaurants and extensive recreational offerings (especially golf). They cater to longer stays and activity‑driven vacations, while the Bobber Inn is positioned for travelers seeking modern comfort, trail access and a lower price point.
Pequot Lakes is one of, if not the most, popular summer getaway areas in Minnesota, with more than 10,000 summer homes and cabins it in communities ranging from Cross Lake to the northeast to Nisswa and Brainerd to the south. It is located about 165 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
