Moorhead Police Alert Businesses to New Tech‑Support Scam

Moorhead police are cautioning local employers about a fast‑growing phone scam aimed at retail and service‑sector workers. The scheme involves callers who present themselves as members of a company’s IT help desk or asset protection team and claim a register or PIN pad needs immediate attention. The callers sound credible and use technical language to gain trust.

Once an employee is engaged, the scammer walks them through what appears to be a routine system check. Those steps actually trigger high‑value credit card or gift card transactions that route money to the fraudsters. Many businesses only discover the loss after the transactions have processed.

Police urge companies to remind staff that legitimate support teams will never request passwords, access codes, or financial details over the phone. If something feels unusual, employees should hang up and call a verified company number. Suspicious calls should be reported to the Moorhead Police Department or the Red River Regional Dispatch Center at 701‑451‑7660.
