Rochester’s Ambient Clinical Analytics Secures $5M, Shifts Leadership

Rochester, Minn.‑based Ambient Clinical Analytics says it has raised a new $5 million strategic funding round and named a new chief executive, marking a significant step forward for the FDA‑approved medical software firm with deep Mayo Clinic roots.

Founded in 2013, Ambient develops real‑time clinical decision‑support tools used at the bedside and in hospital command centers. Its flagship product, the FDA‑cleared AWARE Sepsis DART system, helps clinicians detect and treat sepsis earlier — a capability that has driven adoption across health systems looking to improve outcomes and reduce costs.

The company operates out of the Mayo Clinic Business Accelerator in downtown Rochester and employs 12 people, including five locally. The latest funding round includes investment from St. Paul‑based Mairs & Power Venture Capital and an unnamed Fortune 500 MedTech company. Ambient says the capital will accelerate product innovation and support broader deployment of its AWARE platform.

Alongside the financing, co‑founder Al Berning is transitioning from CEO to executive chairman. Berning, a well‑known Rochester technology leader and former IBM and Pemstar executive, will be succeeded by Brian Tufts, whose background includes leadership roles at Baxter and Vantive.

Ambient says the leadership shift positions the company to scale its technology across more health systems at a time when hospitals are seeking clearer, faster clinical insights.
